I had this problem until I found that you _must_ do one of two things:
- give the backend/device combination explicitly on the commandline,
eg xsane plustek:/dev/usb/scanner0
- or set the shell variable SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE
eg (for bash) declare -x SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE="plustek:/dev/usb/scanner0"
Sane _still_ tries all the backends it's got before deciding to use the
one you've specified, but that only takes a minute or so....
