Hi Pat,

is the printer connected to the scanner? If so please remove and
make sure, that the scanner is the only device on the parport.
Make sure that the parport is set to EPP mode (in the BIOS)

I'm not sure about the unresolved symbols, but AFAIR the Mandrake
stuff is a little bit crappy. Maybe you should do some cleanup work on your
current kernel configuration:
cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
make modules

Then rebuild the scanner driver... In general you should not get any
unresolved symbols.
Another problem sometimes is the IEEE1284 support for the parport -
you might try and disable it in the parport kernel konfiguration...
If the driver still refuses to load, enable the debug messages while
recompiling the driver:
make clean
make all DEBUG=y
make install

and so on. Then try to load the driver and send the result of
dmesg
to the list (or at list to my privat address: ####@####.####
