The Wisp628 can use a 16F628, 16F628A or even a 16F648A, using the same
.hex file. I use either of the other chips when I am out of 16F628A
(which is the cheapest of the three).

I have used both the 628 and 628A.  The programming algorithms do
differ.  Otherwise the 628 and 628A are pretty much identical.  Biggest
non-programming difference is the 628A has a better internal osc.

You can get PDF specs at microchip.com, look for the Programming Spec.
The normal datasheet doesn't cover the programming details.
