In looking at the Debian packages, I did not find a package
specificly named libdl-dev but there was one called libdlm-dev.
Likewise, there wasn't a libpthread-dev but

libopenthreads-dev
libopenthreads-dev - Object-Oriented (OO) thread interface for C++ programmers,

This library is intended to provide a minimal & complete Object-Oriented
(OO) thread interface for C++ programmers. It is loosely modeled on the
Java thread API, and the POSIX Threads standards. The architecture of the
library is designed around "swappable" thread models which are defined at
compile-time in a shared object library.

I hate to see you have to go to all that trouble. If it is
not too difficult, that would be great. Other than trouble-shooting
time, the CLI version has only required the glib package plus pop-dev
libraries. It might be a good thing in the future to have configure
bomb out if each of the libs aren't there so we know we've got a
proper system on which to make gpsim without the GUI.

I am certainly willing to try any more libraries that could
have the headers in them which are still missing. Judging from the
point at which make crashes, we are just centimeters off the end of
the runway.

If you want to see the last config.log, I can send it to you.
Here is something I spotted right off.

configure:3499: gcc -E conftest.c
conftest.c:11:28: ac_nonexistent.h: No such file or directory
configure:3505: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| /* confdefs.h. */
