You can help finding situation with more then one authinfo command per
session. All Commands are logged in news.debug (depending on
/etc/syslog.conf settings). You can find multiple authinfo commands per
session with:
$ grep -i "\] authinfo" news.debug | awk '{print $5}' | sort | uniq
--count | awk '$1>1{print}'

There is currently discussion on the ietf-nntp mailing list on
whether we should permit clients to perform multiple
authentications steps per session. That is, after a successful
AUTHINFO, should the client be permitted to issue AUTHINFO again.
The consensus seems to be that there is no real-world use for
this functionality. However, if you have written (or use) a
client which issues multiple AUTHINFOs in a single session, or if
you've written a server and see clients doing this, we want to
hear about it now rather than later. Thus, please respond
either here or on ietf-nntp (or via email to me if you prefer).
