If you use one of the latest kernels, namely >= 2.4.12,
then you simply need

[usb]
device /dev/usb/scanner0

and the driver uses the device connected to /dev/usb/scanner0
and retrives automatically the product and vendor id.

The format "[usb] vendor-id product-id" is only a workaround
for 2.2.x kernels and kernels below 2.4.12, where the scanner module
does not return the needed IDs...

In the next release, the "[usb] vendor-id product-id" is commented out.
