John, the plustek-module is only needed if you have
a parallel-port device.
If scanimage won't find the scanner, then you have a problem
with your configuration file plustek.conf, which is located
at /etc/sane.d or /usr/local/etc/sane.d
Then it depends on your kernel, if you use 2.4.12 or higher,
you simply need the following:
[usb]
device /dev/usbscanner
if you use an older kernel:
[usb] 0x07B3 0x0017
device /dev/usbscanner
that's it.
I think, that you have an older SANE installation, whoose configuration
files have not been replaced by the newer ones
Please check this.
