Plus another $800 for the 8051 assembler / development system plus god knows
how much for driver development. If you know of any complete ready to use
drivers or have had success with driver sample code from Cypress, please let
me know as I would like to have it ready next time an opportunity comes
along.

I disagree, since anyone can buy the dev kit for $495 from the Cypress
web site.  They seem much more readily available than any other
12 Mbps or 480 Mbps solution I've seen.  I'm not a "big name developer",
but I've never had any trouble getting the information I've needed
from Cypress.
