http://www.raisonance.com/ has a free demo version of their 8051 
development system (as well as versions for the Philips XA and the 
STMicroelectronics ST6), including assembler, C compiler, and simulator. 
The only limitation of the demo version is that it has a 4K maximum 
program size; if you want to develop something larger, you have to pay.
