  I'm just starting to play a bit with PIC's. I'm playing with 16F84 (ya!
I know it is outdated, someone gave me two and that is what I have by
now ;)) and using a serial device (sometime) named Com84 whose schematics
can be seem here :

     http://www.techfreakz.org/oldstuff/com84.gif

  There is a screenshot of this mounted inside a DB25 connector :

     http://www.techfreakz.org/oldstuff/picb.html

Where it is named "PicBlaster PIC Programmer". To download '.hex' file
I'm using (one of ) 'prog84' software version 3.0a12 that can be found at:

     http://home3.inet.tele.dk/frda/picasm/prog.html

  It works quite well. I managed to build the programmer in a DB9 so that
I can carry it with me and program anyware with my notebook.

  The '~/.pro84rc' file I'm using for this programmer is :

==== cut here ========8<------------------------------
#----------- lots of comments removed --------------------------
port serial

### for serial port:
base= 0x3f8     # com1, ttyS0
#base= 0x2f8    # com2, ttyS1
#base= 0x3e8    # com3, ttyS2
#base= 0x2e8    # com4, ttyS3

#dos only:
loop = 15

# settings for Com84 serial pic programmer:
power: TxD
mclr: TxD
data: DTR
data_f: CTS
clock: RTS
==== cut here ========8<------------------------------

  Before I forget: yes, I'm using Linux in this notebook. If someone is
interested I've packaged in RPM :

gputils-0.10.3-1cl.i386.rpm
prog84-3.0a12-1cl.i386.rpm
simulpic-19960706-1cl.i386.rpm

Which can help installation on Linux boxes. Of course souce RPM are
available too.
