Did this on an LFS system recently. LFS is only a base, so I had to put 
everything on. This is from memory

you don't need anything fancy for gputils, or picp

gtk+ -1.2.10 requires zlib, and glib-1.2.10. If you go for gtk+-2.x you need 
a lot more in the way of dependencies.

gtk-extra works with gtk+-1.2.10. gpsim comes on fine like this
pkgconfig might then go. If you have an rpm based distro, run ldconfig after 
every install to update the libraries database, or else it won't find what 
you put on.

post your error and the lines before it. Some of these guys  will understand 
it
