Good start.

Bad start. Take a read of my 16F628 comparison page:
http://www.finitesite.com/d3jsys/16F628.html
You'll never consider a 16F84 again.

You can put together one of my Trivial programmers with RatShack parts and
an afternoon worth of time. Located here:
http://www.finitesite.com/d3jsys
Note that I have a link to the high voltage programmer.

Programmers are orthogonal to development software. The only compatibility
issue is the programming software. If it's a Tait style programmer then it
should work fine with picprg2.3d which is found on my pages above.

Asked and answered.

Don't use a 16F84. The 16F628 is so much better and so much cheaper that it's
a slam dunk.
