The current version of SDCC in cvs has tons of "dodgy" bits for the PIC 
stuff. I'm aware of most of them and will get to them as soon as things 
cool down. --- I know I've been promising for a while, but I've been 
really busy here lately (today is typical - I started  before 6:30 am and 
it's approaching 10pm now... of course I haven't been working the whole 
time, I can't ride a bike or drive a car while programming.) 

This particular bug lies in the register allocation code. I've seen 
several variations of this, but they all are about the same. Another 
common bug that's lurking is with register paging. Both of these are at 
the top of the list when I can get back to sdcc.
