Thanks for the reply, and sorry for the delay in coming back. I sorted it. I
lumped all the A/D setup stuff into a single subroutine, and cut all outside
writes to those registers, which fortunately I could do. The mud became
clearer. I then followed the datasheet scrupously. It appears that my a/d
didn't like running from a 32khz oscillator; It was happier on it's own
internal oscillator. Further, I caught a deviation from the sequence in the
datasheet.; I was turning it on too soon.
