I'm running spamassassin locally and although it does cut down on the
amount of spam, despite quite a bit of manual tweaking of the rules it
still doesn't catch everything and it does regularly falsely trigger on
non-spam too.

Let's see if banning non-subscribers helps first, shall we? If anything
does get through it would have to be from a spammer who went to the
trouble of subscribing their address to the list first, which I can't
see as being a very common occurrence.

As per your request, I modified the archive a couple of days ago to
remove email addresses.
