I originally intended to use the 16C54 because it seemed to be the cheapest
chip around. The programmer I've been using is too old to support the flash
PICs, so I didn't really look at them. I want to use the dsPIC3F2010 because
I need one processor with lots of RAM, and (for the price) I'd rather not get
an external chip (with all the address multiplexing that entails).

The 16F88 is a little overspecified for what I need, but thanks for the FLASH
pointer; I'd assumed that they'd be more expensive than older PICs but I'm
just glancing through a catalogue and I note that the 16F630/676 (for
example) has more features than the 16C54 at a lower price and a smaller
form-factor :)
