Carlo,

You might also try sdcc. The pic16 (for the pic18 series of chips) is 
quite usable. I have
been using sdcc and assembler with the pic18f252. There are some bugs 
but the developer(s)
is fixing problems at a rapid pace. I like being able to compile and 
debug using standard C
and then move the code to the target CPU.
