For gpsim, adding the extended instruction will be fairly involved too. 
In addition, adding the new processors that support these instructions 
will require some work. Finally, it'll be hard to test anything out until 
gputils has been updated. So this will take some time. On the other hand, 
I've been so much time on gpsim's infrastructure that I've neglected most 
of the new upgrades/processors that Microchip has introduced.

BTW, I know this doesn't affect SDCC, but what about the dsPIC tools? 
Microchip has released the source for the C-compiler, assembler and linker 
(they're part of the gcc tool chain). I don't know if they've updated gdb 
or not.
