I've heard good things said about the display from the Nokia 3100
series of phones.  You can get them fairly cheaply on eBay and
the technical info is available on the yampp (I think I got that
right) web pages.  I have one, but I haven't gotten around to
using it.  It *looks* nice, but the mechanical issues will take
some care to get right--it's not a nice pinned module like most
char displays.
