Just to mention, direct port programming or posix in windows is not
sufficient.
Using the windows API is a requirement, because every virtual com port need
it.
I have seen one motherboard, that don't have legacy ports, only usb, and a
usb to serial and usb to ethernet chip on the Motherboard !!!.
Surely, it's not the usual case, maybe in future, it can. And if the win
user
need a usb cable, then the windows API must used. Only a handfull usb
converter
implement the mapping between posix kernel calls and windows API. The most
implement 
only the windows api.
