I use picprog under gentoo since it installs without a hitch + seems to
support all the pics + be under active development. I use the programmer
schematic here: http://www.jdm.homepage.dk/newpics.htm it costs about £2
to build on a breadboard and if you build it that way you don't need
adapters etc for every pic with different pinouts, simply move the
connections.
