I have the same adapter but only use it for my Palm Pilot, and have not
yet tried it with the PICSTART PLUS. I had much difficulty getting it to
work properly and still cannot get it to work after booting up.
It seems that I must prime the serial port with minicom first. I do this
by becoming root then starting minicom then pressing the Palm Pilot synch
button which produces some garbage characters in the minicom screen, then
stop minicom. I seem to have to start minicom twice and do this procedure
then I can use J-Pilot to communicate normally with the PalmPilot.
I noted that there might be something wrong with the mct_u232 driver being
blocked, but I'm not sure that is the problem.
I connect minicom to /dev/ttyUSB0 .
Some things that might be useful:
statserial /dev/ttyUSB0
shows hardware voltage levels
strace
could help to find other programs accessing /dev/ttyUSB0
cat /proc/tty/driver (do this many time to see changes)
