PICkit 1 and PICkit 2 are both fine choice. Of course PICkit 2
is not yet available and we need to wait for Mark or other's
hack to make it work under Linux. PICkit 1 is already working
under Linux thanks to Orion Sky Lawlor and Mark Rages' work.

Why not use the PicKit?  It's a fast and gentle introduction to the
PIC.  It is designed for the purpose (teaching newbies).  It is cheap
and widely available.  It is USB. It is supported under Linux. It
supports a large section of 16F midrange parts.
