I just now soldered some ground wires from the ground pins of the PIC
and the LCD module, as well as the ground side of the capacitors on the
crystals, to the ground lead coming in from the battery.

However, it's made little or no difference.

I haven't seen this happening on breadboard or veroboard circuits, so I
can accept that there's some electrical crap going on.

I'll create a new PCB artwork, flooding the ground traces to all unused
areas of the board, and see if that makes any difference.
