Ouch. That's painful dude.

You are aware that Microchip has a sample program. All you 
need to do is fill out some info. They will send you up
to 15 chips.

Any HCT part works as long as it has a function that
allows for buffering only. For example you can use a 74HCT04
inverter. It buffers and inverts the signal.
 Radio Shack used to carry an entire line.
It looks like they only sell cell phones and stereos now.

16F84's will cause more problems then they will solve.
If your only objective is to learn the basics of programming
PICs, then it's fine. However once you start to develop
real projects, it's limitations get in the way fast.

Where are you located? Are there any nearby parts stores?
If not then maybe you can use Randy from glitchbuster.com. He
has a wide range of parts and very reasonable prices.
