I'm surprised you had to go through that trouble. In my case, the issue 
was that pkg-config was unable to locate the file "gtkextra-2.0.pc". So 
I just copied this to the same directory where "gtk+-2.0.pc" was 
located. Another solution (and perhaps a preferred one) is to assign a 
value to the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH.

BTW, I'm going to place a new version (0.21.11) of gpsim on my web page 
very shortly. The main reason for this is because an FC4 developer was 
asking about an "officially" released version that works with the 
officially released gtkextra. I verified that the bug with gtkextra's 
sheet widget (gpsim's register window) has been fixed. So I'll be 
removing gtkextra from my web page.
