PICkit 2 does not support 18F chip yet. However Microchip is
working on it. If you look at the schematics, PICkit 2 is a
programmer and more. With the open firmware source,
it can be extended to support more PICs. It can do other
things as well because it is designed to be very hackable.

With its low price and high potential, it is a very good choice for
those want a  ready-made programmer.
