I did not have the 'devel' version of gtk installed but I have
installed it now, plus a couple of other gtks ie: gtk2 etc. But still
no sign of pkg-config anywhere. I do have a *directory* called
pkgconfig in one of my gnome libraries but I don't think this is
revelant. So the answer to your last question appears to be 'no'.
Any further help will be appreciated.
By the way I am using SUSE 9.1
