IME odyssey[1] works very well using the existing parport kernel
driver.

I don't see why would one particularly want a new kernel driver;
that's just extra hassle and doesn't seem to provide much benefit.  I
suppose it might allow a slightly faster programming speed on certain
computers but of course faster signal transmission needs more careful
hardware engineering.

In any case I find odyssey on a moderately modern computer quite
adequate, in the sense that the programming time is dominated by
actual flash write time rather than being limited by data transfer
rate.  (Obviously the same is not true of readout, but the critical
operation in a test-edit cycle is `reflash'.)
