I do not know much about JTAG but I think JTAG is a standard.
However the implementation is quite different between vendors.
To my understanding, the software is the key here. That are
very cheap parallel port based JTAG programmers/debuggers for
AVR, MSP430 and LPC ARM MCUs and very expensive ones.
The good thing about Microchip is that they might release
the firmware for the 18FLF4550 on board Explorer 16 demo
board (for PIC24 and dsPIC33) later. It will eventually
support SPI, ICSP, JTAG via USB for the PIC24 and dsPIC33.
If this is the case, there will be cheap USB based JTAG
programmer and debuggers for PIC24 and dsPIC33 later.
