In theory JDM2 can support 18F USB chips as well. In fact under
Windows, WinPIC 800 claims support of many PICs and
dsPICs using simple programmers.

pikdev claims supports of 18F4550 under Linux but I am not so
sure about whether it support 18F4550 when using JDM.
But personally I will still prefer Wisp628A over JDM type programmers
because the added reliability.
PS+ clones which Jeff recommends can be a good option as well.
