I think gpsim is good simulator. The main problem is/was dependancy on a lot of libraries. Last year I needed to simulate PICs on Windows and tried to compile newest gpsim. I had to give up without success. Maybe now it can be possible. I have to try it again.
I remember some (year2003 or so) problems in pic16f877 - TMR1, TMR0 flag setting etc. But it can be fixed now.
Personally I don't like Java. Java is big and slow. I tried Eclipse. Maybe I have slow computer...
