Some versions of Picprog including 1.7 had a bug that
prevented them from running as root under 2.6 kernels.
I found that 1.7 would work perfectly for normal users
but would hang up forever at the "Burning program memory,"
stage when run as root.

See picport.cc from the picprog 1.8.1 source code for details:
******************************************
// Set this to -1 if you want to use nanosleep when running as root.
// This only works with 2.4 kernels, 2.6 series kernels no more work.
int picport::use_nanosleep = 0;
*******************************************

Version 1.8.1 works fine here for root and as a normal user.
