I believe none of the PICkit 2 host software (inlcuding Microchip's
Windows PC application) supports 16F87x (16F87xA are supported)
now even though the firmware does support it.

pk2-1.36 does not support 18F PICs. The next version of pk2 will
support 18F PICs. Mark Rages is also updating pyk to support 18F PICs.

Piklab supports PICkit 2 and 18F PICs under Linux. It has a command
line interface called piklab-prog. Piklab is at the following URL:
http://piklab.sourceforge.net/.
