That is the right way. I hope you have also sorted out the problems with the
programmer. I tend to believe that your apt problem is related to
the use of dial-up.

I have Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Draper ) 64-bit installed but I have not really use
it yet. I did install PIC related packages and I did not find any problems
with gputils/gpsim/sdcc/piklab/pk2/pyk/... I did have problems with Wine
but I think that is actually a good thing... Why run IC-Prog or MPLAB
under Linux with wine since we have good alternative native Linux
applications?
