It's a long running debate of its effectiveness. When I'm developing I like
to have all my resources available. Also I like to be able to pick the
connection interface between the PC and the PIC. When you use a programmer
you have to use Microchips interface. Another issue is that unless you're
using ICD, you cannot debug using the same channel that you use to program.

Nearly all of my successful projects where developed with a bootloader.
