Thanks for the explanation (and to David Barnett too).  I can work
around it for the moment by having models that pretend to be the other
PICs without actually running PIC code.

As for UI, I noticed the proprietary closed-source Proteus VSM says

    "VSM can even simulate designs containing multiple CPUs, since it is
    a simple enough matter to place two or more processors on a
    schematic and wire them together."

There's various screen shots on the web site.  Perhaps that gives some
ideas.
