I would imagine that the best approach ( having mucked about a bit
myself in the FLOSS front ) would be to pool the various projects
together under one new one. Then there could be branches in the CVS or
SVN system that are maintained by the existing lead developers should
they want to try extensive changes. IMHO Nikolas was sensible  to fork
if he could not do more than submit patches, but still, we are going to
have duplicated work.

I *highly, highly* recommend the book:
"Producing Open Source Software" by Karl Vogel ( one of the originators
of CVS and SVN ). It covers all these issues and many more very very
well.
