Thank you so much for the help! Apparently my readline installation was
wonky or too out of date like you said. A reinstall seems to have fixed that
problem.  Now, however, I get this error message:
/usr/bin/ld: can't locate file for: -lpopt
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [gpsim] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all] Error 2
