readline has been the source of constant headaches for gpsim. You don't
know how many times I've come close to yanking it out. I suppose this is
why other packages like octave and guile have their own customized
readline libraries packaged with their source. It get's around these
idiosynchracies, but at the cost of duplicating libraries. Sigh.
