The only way gpsim will improve is by giving feedback. 

What do YOU find is un-nessessarily complicated about gpsim?

It could be useful:
I have made (just yesterday) a parallel port interface module for gpsim,
so if you use at most 8 ouputs and 5 inputs then you can use the
parallel port for testing out your code.

It'll be in the next gpsim release.
