Just for the record, I have had problems getting gpsim to compile from 0.20.5 
or so onwards (usually because of the readline library) on Linux Mandrake 
8.1.  However, this time (0.20.14) it has compiled with out a problem on the 
same system :-) which now means that I can use the LCD modules etc..
