The advantage is that autoconf/automake are greatly supported tools that are
standard, portable, well maintained and with which some platform dependant
flags can be detected (framebuffer capable, if this function is available or
not, compiler flags, etc...)
It also let yo do dynamic library/dynamic linking easy in a cross-platform
view.
