A message short ago asked if alpha blending was just a cool thing or if it
was useful. Sorry that I don't reply directly, but my index finger is
faster than my mind ;-)

Alpha blending is cool, but it is also useful. If you want to show
readable styled text in a small color display (say, a 5" LCD?), you need
to have antialiasing.

Antialiased text works much better if you have alpha blending.

So, if you want to implement something like a web browser for handhelds,
alpha blending is a good thing to have!
