You may not need to recompile the kernel if you are using a desktop
distribution. For example RedHat 6.x has framebuffer built in, just
not enabled by default.
Take a look in your /dev directory for frambuffer drivers. You will
see something like this:
Red Hat Linux release 6.1 (Cartman)
Kernel 2.2.12-20 on an i686

[gary@hilda gary]$ ls /dev | grep fb
fb
fb0
fb1
fb2
fb3
fb4
fb5
fb6
fb7
[gary@hilda gary]$
If you have a situation like this you just need to modify lilo to
boot in framebuffer mode. See the framebuffer faq at:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO-5.html#ss5.2
Actually you will need to do the lilo setup in either case. Even if
you end up rebuilding your kernel you will need to modify lilo if you
use that to boot your system.
