The Nano-X launcher (demos/nanox/launcher.c) already does this with 
a GrSetBackgroundPixmap() on the GR_ROOT_WINDOW_ID. It doesn't scale the
image though (I think Greg has some modifications to 
GrSetBackgroundPixmap() that supports scaled drawing mode in the works).
If you're already using launcher, just set $window_background_image to the
image filename and $window_background_mode to 2 in launcher.cnf.
