PPM (Portable PixMap) is colour.
PGM (Portable GreyMap) is greyscale.
PBM (Portable BitMap) is black and white.
PNM (Portable aNyMap) is the collective name for all of the above.
jpegtopnm is called that instead of jpegtoppm because there is such a
thing as a greyscale jpeg (I've never encountered one though), which it
will convert to a pgm instead of a ppm. I don't think it'll do any harm
to run ppmtopgm even if you do find a greyscale jpeg- it just won't
perform any conversion if the input is already a pgm.
