Okay, I got it working.  1.0.7-final works straight from the tarball. 
(Although Mandrake's Cooker RPMs don't seem to work.)  All I have to do
is disconnect/reconnect the usb cable on the scanner after loading the
module and it works.  Should have tried that earlier, but oh well.

Now it works and xsane fires up quite nicely.  The pictures suck, but
hey, it works!
