The gamma sliders do work in xsane, and do effect the results, 
but at best, its a red only output now.

Humm, default apparently is color42, maybe I should try just 
'color'? brb.

No, first scan almost had an image, but looked like big black 
envelope was overlaid, all subsequent scans were black with some 
red detail.  This was in color, color42, and greyscale modes.  
Grey came out blank, but mildly cyan colored at about 18% grey 
card brightness.

The salt mine calleth. :(
