So that explains that. Humm, I should maybe build a straight
1.0.7 to use as a baseline.

Have you queried epson about this? They occasionally have been
known to loan printers to the cups people. And have even hosted
a shootout, with the cups drivers actually making better output
than the winderz driver versions they supply! Of course I have
no idea how far from their headquarters you are.
